National Nutrition Week

by (Dietitian & Sports Dietitian)

Each year Nutrition Australia sets a challenge for the week, with this year’s challenge focusing on encouraging people to prepare more healthy meals at home.

The goal? Prepare healthy meals EVERY day for seven days, and eat to the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Are YOU up to the challenge?!! We sure are!

Why take the challenge?

The latest survey on Australia’s health shows we’re not eating the recommended amount of food from the five core food groups, with some dire stats –

  • Less than 10% of Australians eat enough vegetables.
  • Only half of us eat enough fruit.
  • And… Over 1/3 of our daily energy comes from discretionary foods like biscuits, cakes, confectionary, fried foods, chips, alcohol and sugary drinks.

All of the above are major contributing factors towards the increasing levels of people being overweight and obesity that we’re seeing in Australia.

Challenge yourself to #CookEatEnjoy healthy meals each day during National Nutrition Week, 12-18 October 2014.

You can go the whole hog and pledge to make every meal for 7 days, or if you like, you can just commit to one meal per day – whether it be making breakfasts, lunches and/or dinners. Even a small step taken is still a step taken towards better health, and can make a big difference to your eating habits and your wallet!

Nutrition Australia have even provided a 7-day meal plan with the recommended amount of foods from each of the five food groups in the Australian Dietary Guidelines to get you started. Easy!

So… What are you waiting for? Challenge yourself to cook, eat and enjoy healthy meals every day for one week! Take the plunge here:

And don’t forget, we would LOVE to see how you are doing, so please share your creations on our Facebook page.
