What is a Myotherapist?

Myotherapy Elwood Cupping TreatmentMyo” is Greek for muscle, and hence a Myotherapist is a muscle specialist. Myotherapists are a multi-skilled therapists whose treatments focus on the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy in order to maintain and achieve the normal integrity of the muscles in the body.

How can a Myotherapist Help Me?

Myotherapy treatments focus on detecting and deactivating trigger points (or muscle knots), which may be referring and causing increased pain and or discomfort. Trigger points can result from birth, trauma, falls, strains, sprains, disease, occupation, misuse or overuse of certain parts of the body. Even though trigger points may lie dormant for years, they can “fire” and cause the muscle to go into painful spasm in the presence of physical or emotional stress.

Repeated spasms can keep the muscle continually contracted and subsequently cause trigger points to develop. These not only generate ongoing pain, but also interfere with posture, balance, and muscle function. Myotherapists also detect and correct muscle imbalances through corrective exercises, stretches, myofacial dry needling, TENS, heat and cold therapy and hands on soft tissue treatment.

Myotherapy is effective in treating such conditions as:

  • Back Pain
  • Arthritis Pain
  • Migraines & Other Headaches
  • Menstrual Cramps
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle Spasm & Cramps
  • Whiplash
  • Neck & Shoulder Pain & Tightness
  • Joint Pain
  • Foot Pain
  • Asthma
  • Reduced Muscle Strength / Range of Motion
  • Sports Injuries
  • Sciatica
  • TMJD
  • Carpel Tunnel Symptoms
  • Tension from Stress
  • Disease Preventing Proper Muscle Function
  • Muscle Cramps

What to expect from our Myotherapy Elwood Team?

The consultation itself will usually involve a thorough assessment, where the therapist will ask questions relating to your goals, as well as assessing the movement of your joints and strength of certain muscles. Your
therapist will provide you with information relating to your condition, as well as advice on appropriate exercises and stretches, hot and cold therapy, taping or activities to avoid. Your therapist may use a variety of hands
on techniques with the aim to decrease pain and restore normal mobility. Whilst Myotherapy techniques can be powerful, they can also be quite gentle and all the way through the consult, the therapist will ensure you are
comfortable.
Initial consultations are 45-60 minutes. A review consultation may be between 30-60 minutes depending on the complexity of your condition.
