Achieving Work-Life Balance

Do you feel that there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do? You feel like you’re struggling to balance your responsibilities at work, at home, and in your relationship? If you do, you’re not alone. Today the average Australian worker is reporting increased levels of stress and complains of the challenges of achieving a balance between work and personal life.

And yet with the right training and a solid understanding of certain principles there is no reason whatsoever why you can’t enjoy such a balance. The key is to clearly identify your core values which are the bedrock motivators for your drive, direction, and your happiness. While you will only ever have 24 hours in a day, with an understanding of your values you will better be able to set realistic goals and establish priority lists in every part of your life. Aligning these with those of your partner will play a major role in giving you the balance you seek.

The following factors are instrumental in maintaining a good balance:

1. At the Personal Level

  • Identify your core values about what matters to you most in life
  • Always implement realistic goals
  • Practice self-care through exercise and personal hobbies
  • Track how you spend your time during the week on a Time Chart

2. At your Workplace

  • Improve your delegation and time-management skills
  • Be more assertive in saying “No!”
  • Beware of workplace distractions and procrastination
  • Be aware of your most productive working hours

3. In your Family and Relationship

  • Identify and discuss your family’s goals
  • Identify your partner’s values and goals
  • Regularly discuss your values and goals with those of your partner
  • At home set boundaries and limit work intrusions
  • Involve the entire family in family goals and tasks
